Car Lockout in Concord by Todos Santos Lock Co.
1You give the street and say what the opening is doing; the hardware on that street is usually already known.
2The van leaves Todos Santos Plaza, and a text names the technician and a thirty-minute window.
3The opening is made without damage wherever the mechanism allows, and the receipt carries the figure you were given.

Five or six Concord parking lots generate most of this work between them. Sun Valley Mall on a Saturday, shopping already loaded, fob face-up on the driver seat. The Concord BART lot at twenty past six, long after the train that brought you home has pulled out. The park-and-ride rows off Willow Pass Road at North Concord. Student spaces at Diablo Valley College between one class and the next. Driveways on Clayton Road where a door swung shut with the engine idling. A work truck at the curb on Salvio Street, tailgate open and every door locked. Cars are opened where they sit, day or night, for a figure fixed while you are still talking.

Two methods exist for this and only one of them is used here. Sliding a flat bar down beside the glass, past the weather seal, marks paint and cuts rubber, and no car built this century should be treated that way. What happens instead is gentler and slower to describe than to do: an inflatable pad opens perhaps a finger of daylight at the upper corner, a stiff reach tool goes in through that daylight, and the button or the interior handle is worked from there, with the door frame taking whatever load there is and the glass taking none. Several hybrids and EVs will arm themselves again the moment the fob is no longer in range, so on those the gap is held while the fob is recovered. That is why the year, the make and the model get asked before the van moves, since the answer picks the tool. A child, an animal on a hot afternoon or medication left on the seat jumps the whole board. Ownership is confirmed while the door is still closed.

Opening a car is $95 to $179, one figure per visit. A common sedan, crossover or hybrid in daylight comes in at $95, and the $89 service call is a part of that number rather than a separate line under it. The top of the range belongs to European doors with a double seal, to cars that lock themselves again while the fob is inside, and to keys shut in a trunk that has no release in the cabin. From 8pm to midnight the $40 evening addition is already folded in, so that same car is quoted as $135. After midnight it is quoted as $170. Level, row and how far across the city you are parked change nothing at all.

You call and give the street or the lot and what the car is doing: year, make, model, and the row, the level or the space if it is inside a structure. The figure is said on the call. The van leaves Todos Santos Plaza, and a text names the technician and gives a thirty-minute window; sixteen to thirty-one minutes covers Concord, with the college and the North Concord lots at the longer end. The door opens with no mark left on it, and nothing gets packed away until the key is back in your hand. Card or tap at the car, and the receipt carries the figure you were given before you have reversed out of the space.

Came up the escalator at North Concord to find my keys sitting in the door pocket and the car locked. $118 on the call. Twenty-three minutes and the van was in the park-and-ride row. He worked the top corner of the frame and there is not a scuff on the paint or the weather seal, which I checked twice because the car is new enough that I would have noticed. Tapped my card in the lot and the receipt was in my email before I got on the freeway.

Every job is priced from the list below. Most of this city was fitted with the same few locks between 1955 and 1968, so the street usually settles the figure on the call, and the receipt carries it unchanged.

FAQ

Car Lockout: quick answers

The dog is shut in the car at Sun Valley Mall and it is warm out.+

Say that in your first sentence. It jumps the board and the van pulls out of the plaza straight away. If the animal is in real distress before anyone arrives, put a window through, choosing the one furthest away from where it is lying, and do not stand there waiting for permission. Replacing a pane is a trivial expense measured against a dog.

My train gets in after midnight and the keys are in the car at the Concord BART lot.+

Call from the platform and give the lot and the row. Both BART stations sit inside the sixteen to thirty-one minutes from the plaza. After midnight the $75 overnight addition is already part of the number you hear, so a common car is $170 on the call and $170 on the receipt, never $95 with something bolted on at the space. The thirty-minute window arrives by text, so you can wait somewhere lit instead of standing beside the car.

Our car is a push-button hybrid and it locked itself while the fob was on the seat.+

That behavior is exactly why the make and model get asked before the van moves. Cars that arm themselves when the fob goes out of range will do it a second time the instant the door is released, so the gap is held open on a wedge until the fob has been recovered. Nothing about the method changes and neither does the figure. Worth knowing too: most of these cars let you adjust that auto-lock timing in the settings menu, and the technician will show you where it lives.
