Car Lockout in Concord

Five or six Concord parking lots generate most of this work between them. Sun Valley Mall on a Saturday, shopping already loaded, fob face-up on the driver seat. The Concord BART lot at twenty past six, long after the train that brought you home has pulled out. The park-and-ride rows off Willow Pass Road at North Concord. Student spaces at Diablo Valley College between one class and the next. Driveways on Clayton Road where a door swung shut with the engine idling. A work truck at the curb on Salvio Street, tailgate open and every door locked. Cars are opened where they sit, day or night, for a figure fixed while you are still talking.

Two methods exist for this and only one of them is used here. Sliding a flat bar down beside the glass, past the weather seal, marks paint and cuts rubber, and no car built this century should be treated that way. What happens instead is gentler and slower to describe than to do: an inflatable pad opens perhaps a finger of daylight at the upper corner, a stiff reach tool goes in through that daylight, and the button or the interior handle is worked from there, with the door frame taking whatever load there is and the glass taking none. Several hybrids and EVs will arm themselves again the moment the fob is no longer in range, so on those the gap is held while the fob is recovered. That is why the year, the make and the model get asked before the van moves, since the answer picks the tool. A child, an animal on a hot afternoon or medication left on the seat jumps the whole board. Ownership is confirmed while the door is still closed.

Opening a car is $95 to $179, one figure per visit. A common sedan, crossover or hybrid in daylight comes in at $95, and the $89 service call is a part of that number rather than a separate line under it. The top of the range belongs to European doors with a double seal, to cars that lock themselves again while the fob is inside, and to keys shut in a trunk that has no release in the cabin. From 8pm to midnight the $40 evening addition is already folded in, so that same car is quoted as $135. After midnight it is quoted as $170. Level, row and how far across the city you are parked change nothing at all.

You call and give the street or the lot and what the car is doing: year, make, model, and the row, the level or the space if it is inside a structure. The figure is said on the call. The van leaves Todos Santos Plaza, and a text names the technician and gives a thirty-minute window; sixteen to thirty-one minutes covers Concord, with the college and the North Concord lots at the longer end. The door opens with no mark left on it, and nothing gets packed away until the key is back in your hand. Card or tap at the car, and the receipt carries the figure you were given before you have reversed out of the space.
